reflection on the movie “david”

on a random tuesday in miami, in a quiet theater, my heart was ignited.

lit on fire once again.

reminded of grit.

this Bible I hold, houses great stories of old.

i thought i'd retell one about a man i'm inspired to emulate.

a man named david. he started out as just a young boy. he wasn't searching for power – he was locked in on purpose.

he took care of others, occupation as a shepherd of sheep.

i think of how those animals needed protection.
of how they needed to be guarded – kept safe from the danger.

before david was ever king – he learned how to take care of the innocent. he knew what it was like to put his flock first.

he knew what it felt like to grapple with the beasts of the earth.

I wonder the memories he made that shaped him.

the thoughts that must have came.
the soul-songs he'd craft and curate.

the moments alone.

the times where no one was seeing him.
no one cheering him on – i see what it made him.
it made him humble and meek.
he craved God – anywhere, anytime.
when he was strong and when he was weak.

he lived out his humanity.

he saved sheep.

he was anointed king, called from the sheep pen into God's great glory.

he heard whispers of Heaven, letting his hands play his instrument.

harmoniously, he sang, & his life became the tapestry God longed to weave.

to show the world a man who would place all their hope in Heaven's king.

from the pen → to anointing → to back again → David knew with God on His side – in life, he'd always win.
He didn't just speak it or sing it. no, he lived it.
he was prepared for it.

the shepherds field was really a practice field, preparing him for his great destiny.
His moment came.

goliath sneered, throwing remarks on the God of Israel.
while David ran to bring Israel snacks, little did he know that a snack run would leave to saving.

courage was forged and this would be the moment it'd shine through.

his character came, stood against the giant who'd ridicule the Name above every Name.

the giant would roar, make fun, & throw his spear.

but God was near.

he was close. David reared back his sling – a stone was thrown.

in the middle of the forehead, his weapon lodged.

a second passed, then two, and with a large thud Goliath fell.

the underdog won. the least of the least stood strong.

and courage was scattered, no longer living just in david's heart. no, now it was deposited into the hearts of once fearfilled men.

courage stood tall. but then another battle would surely come.

saul.

saul would chase & chase & chase.

until his ego caused his spirit to rest.

david would reign – not with ego – but with humility.

not with control, but with compassion.

david was different.

set apart, chosen, for a great purpose. a leader who'd stand for the cause of His God.

a leader who'd defend, not caring for anyone's applause.

he's the God who we can place our trust in.

and sometimes we may have to face giants in times of certain death, just like david with goliath. and it won't always look like triumph.

but we can rest assured that if we put our faith in God, everything we'll be up against will shatter under His conquering power.

i'm walking away wanting to look more like David – humble, hidden, courageous, and brave.  willing to stand up in the strength and power of the God who saves.
