christmas poem

some days this love i hold close

feels like one i barely know

but then you come in all over again

take my breath away

like you did the shepherd’s on that glorious day

our Savior came to be the way

for light to shine through even in the messiest place

swaddling clothes held the lamb

who’d one day be slain

but first he had to live

and breathe

and be

human, just like you and me

sinless & embodying love perfectly

a reality no human could ever even dream

on a dark day, grace came

came and swept me off my feet in the best way

now i won’t ever be the same

you leave me weak in my feet

because of how your grace came and met me

i feel it in my tears

i see it in my friend’s face

i breathe it in with every waking day

i imagine that little baby’s cry

and mary holding the one

who holds the world together

in her arms, love coddled

joseph’s eyes met his sons

who’d one day be the son, God would give for all

born only to meet death at the young age of thirty three

little did they know

death could resurrect after being hung on a tree

it all started with a promise

and that promise became peace

the kind of peace

that’d first have to break

into a million pieces

in order for me to be free

what kind of crazy love is this?

a baby in a stable

who cradles me in His arms

when i feel lonely and sick

who holds me when i feel far from a radical love like this

on a dark day, grace came

these tears i cry won’t ever be the same

they hold great weight

because i know the God who comes in the unexpected place

meets me when i least expect it

and shows me His resurrection

greatness that starts small

yet always prevails over the darkest squall

Jesus wasn’t coming in weak

he was coming to wage war

“a decisive strike of heaven,” my pastor called it

and now i get to experience heaven strike my mind with each passing day

as i ponder and read of his wonderful, marvelous grace

his decision remains:

light’s greatest collision

continues to break the evil that takes

heaven and earth strain

swaddling clothes wrapped the very One who’d save

just as He was covered

so, now he covers me

on a dark day, grace came

the world received her king

i’m utterly, deeply, & irrevocably swept off my feet

now my life will never be the same

because on a dark day, grace came to rescue me from all my chains
